Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Curriculum in Peace, War, and Defense offers a long-standing interdisciplinary undergraduate major focused on questions of peace, conflict, and human security. PWAD faculty include academics from a range of social science and humanities disciplines, as well as professors of the practice with extensive experience in public service, the military, and diplomacy. This combination of academic faculty and professors of the practice provides PWAD students with a unique academic experience.
The mission of the Center for European Studies is to enhance undergraduate and graduate instruction in contemporary European studies, to promote scholarship and training for students and faculty from all disciplines and professional schools, and to stimulate institutional and public awareness of Europe’s economic, cultural, and political importance on campus, in North Carolina, and across the nation. The Center offers an undergraduate major in contemporary European studies and a graduate program, the Transatlantic Masters Program.
Position Summary
The Teaching Assistant Professor, with a specialization in international relations, will be located in the Curriculum in Peace, War, and Defense (PWAD) and will have a joint appointment with the Center for European Studies. The position will teach teach 3 courses per semester (fall and spring) in support of the academic programs offered by the Curriculum in Peace, War, and Defense and the Center for European Studies. Courses will include introductory and core courses for the undergraduate PWAD major: peace and security studies, international relations and global politics, and the ethics of peace, war, and defense. The candidate may also teach other courses in the PWAD curriculum related to their area of expertise. The candidate should be prepared to offer undergraduate and graduate courses on themes that intersect with European politics such as populism, migration, human rights, development aid or trade. The position will also teach multiple courses each year within the TransAtlantic Masters (TAM) program. There are no research expectations associated with this position.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
PhD in political science, international relations, or related field. Demonstrated record of successful teaching performance.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Familiarity with European politics is strongly preferred. Willingness to teach an annual course on statistics and data analysis is an asset.
