The Department of Middle Eastern Studies at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor in Arabic Linguistics, with expertise in dialectology and historical linguistics. The position will begin in August 2026.
Duties include teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses (including large undergraduate classes and advanced seminars), serving in the doctoral program in Arabic Linguistics (including training and supervising graduate students), and meaningfully contributing to related programs including Arabic Literature, Middle East History, Ancient Near East, and Linguistics.
All faculty in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies are expected to pursue a strong record of research and publication, while also engaging in service to the Department, College, University, and profession.
To be considered for a tenure-track position, applicants must have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. by time of appointment, or they must expect to obtain the Ph.D. within a year of joining the faculty as Instructor. Tenured applicants must hold a Ph.D. At either level, the Ph.D. must be in Arabic, Linguistics, or another relevant field. Native or near-native fluency in Arabic is required, and candidates must demonstrate excellence, or the potential for excellence, in research, publication, and teaching.
