Position Highlights
The Department of Africana Studies, within the School of International Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SILLC) of the College of Humanities, at the University of Arizona invites applicants for a Career Track Assistant Professor of Practice position with expertise in Hip-Hop Studies and Film (including Hip-Hop Cinema), from any region of the world beginning August 2025. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand by August 15, 2025. This is a one-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal, contingent on satisfactory performance review, funding, and departmental needs. We are particularly interested in a candidate with a history of excellent teaching experience in all modalities (in-person, online, hybrid), and sound familiarity with multi-media teaching technologies and platforms. The ideal candidate must demonstrate a commitment to student success and engagement, including actively recruiting undergraduate majors in Africana Studies. The successful candidate must be able to teach introductory and upper-level classes in Africana Studies (including large enrollment classes); contribute to program building; develop and teach courses in the University´s General Education curriculum.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach three courses per semester based on department needs
  • Engage in Departmental, College, and University service and outreach
  • Engage in extramural professional service and outreach as appropriate
  • Contribute to curriculum development and program building
  • Recruit and mentor students, majors, and minors
  • Contribute to University initiatives focused on fostering student success, enhancing student engagement, and mentoring students
  • Participate in Departmental and College-wide activities such as Convocation, Welcome Back receptions, Homecoming, Commencement, Tucson Humanities Festival, Black History Month etc.
  • Additional duties may be assigned

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent teaching skills
  • Demonstrated student-centered pedagogical knowledge and experience; ability to serve the 21st-century educational needs of our student population
  • Superior communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to teach several current AFAS general education courses, including AFAS 200 Introduction to Africana Studies and AFAS 371 Hip-Hop Cinema

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, as indicated by course evaluations, peer observations, teaching awards, or other metrics in one or more of the specialization areas listed under the position summary
  • Experience and expertise with (or willingness to learn) online/hybrid teaching, multimedia technology, and an aptitude for creating innovative teaching

Preferred Qualifications
  • Record or evidence of high-quality teaching skills includes student engagement and effective feedback
  • Experience using cutting-edge teaching methods and/or curricular design to effectively promote student learning and engage a student body from a variety of backgrounds
  • Study abroad and/or lived experiences abroad
  • Experience in the field of Hip Hop Cinema and Hip Hop Cultures
